What kind of wood do I want for my cabinets?
Kraftmaid offers several different sorts of woods for their cabinets. This decision
becomes important because it helps to define the look of your kitchen or bathroom. Each
wood takes stain differently, and has a different appearance. These differences can give
your room a very different feel.
Oak is one of the more traditional woods. It is hard, durable, and has a characteristic,
colonial look that is a classic.
Maple is another hard wood, but it has a much tighter grain. What this means is that it
can have a more consistent look to it, and is often light in color. Maple often lends a
very contemporary flair to a kitchen, especially with the more linear door designs.
Cherry is considered by many to be a real premium wood for cabinets and woodwork. It has a
nice, rich visual texture to it, and tends to gain a bit of red as it ages. It does add to the
cost of a kitchen, but it also adds a very distinct feel to the room.
Hickory is a hardwood that can look very similar to that of oak. Its main charms come from
the greater amount of variation in the wood itself. Hickory is known for its various knurls,
grain, and various mineral deposits. Hickory gives a very colonial, rustic look to a room.
Pine is a softer wood, and so absorbs the stain at the factory a little more readily. As a
result, the tints are a little deeper. There is also the good chance of some variation
in the wood itself, giving you a few knots that add character to the wood.
Poplar is a hardwood that lends itself best to painted cabinets. You still get a wood grain, and
the feel of a painted wood, but you aren't covering up a wood that is valued for its grain.
