15 pound felt
15 pound felt is the most commonly used material underneath roofing shingles, and has been
for generations. It starts off as a sort of paper, and is embedded with asphalt to make it
more resistant to the elements.
Its name comes from its weight over 100 square feet (i.e. a square).
The 15 pound felt of today is arguably somewhat lighter than it used to be, due in part to our
more modern production methods.
