3 Tab Shingles
The name '3-tab' refers to a standard design of asphalt or fiberglass shingles.
There are two cuts in the edge that is exposed to the
weather. When this is overlapped by other shingles of the same cut, they look
like separate shingles. Since the two cuts make three tabs, that's what they're known by.
The two cuts allow the manufacturers to make more shingles at a faster rate, and allow the
roofer to install at a faster rate as well.
There are also benefits for the homeowner:
-The tabs give the appearance of a traditional shingled roof.
-There are not as many seams between the three part shingle. This means there are fewer places
for water to penetrate and cause problems.
-Faster installation means less money spent on labor.
