Board Footage
Board footage is a method of measuring the amount of timber you have. These days, it is
most commonly used by distributors and mills rather than consumers, but at one time, it was
the standard way to describe material.
What board footage measures, basically, is the volume of wood in a given peice or
lift. This differs somewhat from lineal footage,
which only describes the quanitity of a certain size of product, using length, not volume.
To calculate Board Footage:
Multiply the dimensions of the timber together, and then divide by 12.
For example, look at a 2" x 4" x 10'
When you multiply 2x4, you get 8. Multiply that 8 by the 10' length, and you get
80. Divide the 80 by 12, and you get 6 2/3 board feet.
