Cornerbead
There are a few different products that are referred to as corner bead.
One is a wooden moulding that is also called an outside corner. It is made to be stained or
painted, and is visible on the outside corners of walls inside the house. It is a decorative
way to give added protection to corners that may get bumped from time to time.
Usually, though, corner bead refers to a product that goes with wallboard. It is a metallic
angle that is designed to attach to the wallboard and then get buried in either plaster or
joint compound.
When you are plastering, you want an extra bit of support underneath the plaster, so that it
won't crack and flake badly over time. Since most plastering these days is done over
Blueboard, the coat of plaster is not very thick, and would
crack pretty easily without this corner bead. It is also known as plaster bead. It looks
very much like a wire mesh that is attached to a small angled piece of metal (usually
aluminum).
The other sort of corner bead is used with sheetrock. The reason
is exactly the same as the one for plastering, except there is only a thin coat of joint
compound instead of plaster. This means that there is more protection needed for the corner,
since the gypsum-based sheetrock is also somewhat fragile
material at the outside corners. The drywall corner bead looks like a flat peice of metal
with a few holes punched in it that has been bent to a 90 degree angle.
