Check
A check is another name for a crack, but it is a particular sort of crack. As lumber dries and seasons, checking is
very common. As the moisture evaporates from the wood, the wood fibers begin to shrink. This does not mean that the
whole piece of wood will shrink like a pair of jeans in the dryer. Since wood fibers are more rigid, it means that as
they shrink, they can pull away from each other. This pulling away occurs along the grain,
and results in the appearance of cracks, or checks, along the wood. A check does not usually run the whole length of the
timber, and in some settings is a desirable trait.
In most every home that uses visible posts and beams, checking is something that will happen, and is expected to happen.
It occurs as everything in the house dries out, and helps to enhance the natural feel of the wood. It no longer looks
perfect, but a part of the allure of wood are its character and imperfections.
