Countersink
Countersink is not the sink that happens to be at the kitchen counter. Nor is is the
phenomenon that you find when the kitchen counter starts to sag.
Countersink is a descriptive term that simply means that the fastener is driven in far enough
that the head does not stick out of the material at all. When you are doing finish carpentry,
this is important, so that a putty can be applied afterwards that hides the fastener completely.
Most commonly, it is finish nails that are countersunk, as well
as drywall screws when used to attach blueboard or
sheetrock. In all of these cases, countersinking the nail or screw gives a cleaner, more
finished appearance to the work.
