Divided Lights
A divided light is a window sash that has been separated into several separate panes of glass.
This is the way windows used to be made, partly because it is easier to make and handle smaller
panes of glass, and partly because it enabled people to replace a smaller pane of glass should one
break.
Today, most windows for use in homes have insulated glass. This means that there are actually
two panes of glass separated by an airspace. There are a few companies who will make windows
that have the insulated glass in a divided light window.
More often you will see wood or plastic grilles attached on the inside of the window
sash, in order to simulate the divided light. There is also an option that gives the appearance
of a true divided light, but that is in fact an imitation, called a simulated
divided light.
