Green
Obviously enough, green can, and often does, refer to the color.
It can also refer to the amount of curing and drying of wood. Most of the framing lumber,
also known as dimensional, has been through a drying process
in a kiln.
The purpose of drying lumber like this is to reduce the amount of twisting and warping that
can happen with any natural product. Green lumber has not been dried much, if at all. As a
result, it can move somewhat as it dries.
The advantage of green lumber is in cost. Generally, green lumber is somewhat lower in cost, though
not always. With some of the larger timbers, such as 8x8's, there is really no cost effective
way to dry the entire timber. Thus it is not uncommon for thicker woods to be considered green.
