A header can be the top of a letter, or a shot in soccer, but in construction, it is the name of the timber that runs
over a feature like a door, window, or archway. This timber is necessary in order to absorb and distribute the stress from
the wall or floor that is above it. If you were to install a door without installing a well supported header, then over time, and not much time at that, the wall above the door would most certainly sag and ultimately come crashing down through the door. With all of this stress placed on the header, it should come as no surprise that a header is generally rather wide, and is rather thick. |
