Lineal Footage
Lineal footage is a way to describe quantities of material in a general way, usually so that
a quote for material costs can be put together. What it means is pretty straightforward. Imagine
the material you want laid down in a straight line, then measure the line. Now you have lineal footage.
This is different from Board Footage, in that it measures the running length of a
particular size of material, rather than the total volume of material.
Mouldings are often measured, bought, and sold by lineal footage. Since it is
a fairly flexible material, usable in varying lengths to hug corners of a room, it often makes sense to
order total footage rather than individual pieces. This is not always true, of course. The most useful
reason for lineal footage is to estimate costs.
It is inportant to note that lineal footage only refers to material that has the same profile. You don't usually
wander in and order 300 lineal feet of "just moulding", or "just wood". You need to be more specific, and ask for
something like 120 lineal feet of baseboard and 40 lineal feet of 1x10
