L V L
LVL is an acronym that means Laminated Veneer Lumber. It is also called a microlam.
It is a certain sort of engineered timber that is used most often as a supporting beam in
home construction, or as a header.
It is made by a process that is rather similar to how plywood is made. There are
many layers of wood that are glued together so that the grain of each layer is perpendicular
to its neighbors. This, together with the strength of the glue give microlams a high level of strength and rigidity that
is very useful when you need support in a building project, but don't have a lot of space for a large timber.
