MDF
MDF is an acronym for Medium Density Fiberboard. It is a relatively new product on the market, and has been well
received due to its flexibility of use. It is not made like standard plywood or
OSB. MDF has no discernable grain at all. Instead it is a dense product that has
wood fibers and pulp that is bound together by a process that introduces pressure and adhesives. The result is a dark
brown panel that is rather hard, but that cuts smoothly and easily. It also tends to be rather cheaper than some other
alternative products. It is generally not used in a structural capacity, however. There are MDF stair treads on the market,
but rarely will you find an entire subfloor made of MDF.
