Mineral Spirits
Mineral spirits is a generic name for products that can be used to clean up
oil based or alkyd based products. Once, it was applied only
to turpentine, or "turps", since that was the product that was available. Nowadays, it also
applies to paint thinner, which is very similar to turpentine, though not quite as versatile.
Paint thinner is generally used for cleaning up oil based paints, or for thinning oil paints
so that they will go through a paint sprayer more easily. Turpentine can be used for this,
but there are lots of other 'old stlye painter' applications for turpentine as well.
