Perlon
A perlon is a wooden piece of a cedar shingle roof. Generally, perlons are spaced, so that on a hot, dry day sunlight is often
visble through the roof. This is no cause for concern, as they are designed this way. When the roof is hit with moisture, the perlons
swell enough to that the overlapping shingles come together and protect the interior from the rain. The reason for this spacing is that
the cedar shingles need a level of air circulation around them if they are to have a long, useful lifespan.
This technique no doubt came about when it was noticed that cedar roofing shingles tend to rot away rather quickly when they are not
allowed to dry out after rain or snow. This is noticeable even today, for if a cedar shingle roof is applied directly to a plywood
deck, the shingles rot away rather quickly - in a few seasons. With proper air circulation, as provided by the perlon design, or by
products like cedar breather, a cedar roof may last for decades.
