Pitch
Pitch is not just something that gets on your hands while handling pine. It is also the angle
of a roof. With roofs, pitch is usually described as 4/12 or 12/12 or some such combination.
The numbers tell you how quickly the roof rises over a set distance. In the case of a 4/12 pitch,
the roof gains 4 feet for every 12 feet of level distance. (This also conveniently translates into
inches, since the figures stay the same.) A 12/12 pitch consequently rises 12 feet for every 12 feet
of level distance. This also can be called a 45 degree angle, but with roofing, 12/12 is more
descriptive and more useful on the jobsite.
