Ripping

Ripping is a term that describes a special sort of cut made with wood. In general terms, it means that the cut runs along the wood with the grain, rather than across it. The most common way this is done is with a table saw. When you change the width of a board, say from a 1 x 6 to a 1 x 4, then you are ripping the board.
