Riser

A riser, also called a kickboard, is an important part of a stairway. For most traditional style homes, risers are important, as they keep things from getting kicked underneath the stair itself. The riser is the vertical piece of wood that goes from the stair below up to the underside of the tread above.

A common height for the riser is around 7". Much higher or lower means the stairway will feel either very steep flat. 7" is usually a comforable-feeling step up.
