Rough Opening
The rough opening is an important measurement for ordering doors and windows. It is the size of
the opening that has been framed into the wall. When you walk through an opening while a house
is being framed, you most likely walked through a rough opening for a door. If you are trying to
replace a window or a door, the only way to get an idea of the rough opening in the wall is to
remove the casing.
The measure of the rough opening is taken from the inside of the framing lumber, both across
and up-and-down. Admittedly, it is easiest to do this when there is no door or window installed
there.
The rough opening is also important to know if you are beginning a project. Whenever you have
a door or window in a wall, knowing the rough opening size of the window or door you plan to
use is vitally important. With the size in hand, you can build in whatever opening size you
want, and it will be a cleaner looking, and more structurally sound installation.
