Ridge Vent

It may seem odd to have a vent at the very top of the house. After all, this is where all of the heat is going to go in the winter, right? The ridge vent does indeed allow excess heat to escape, but this is actually a good thing. The heat loss in the winter should be relatively minor, assuming that you have insulation in your attic.

In the summer, the ridge vent becomes very important. It allows hot air that build up underneath the roof to escape. This means that your shingles won't cook as much as they might have without the extra ventilation. There is also the added benefit of allowing fresh air to circulate through the house.

This same circulation is just as important in winter. Despite the colder temperature, there still needs to be a source of fresh air as well as a way for the stagnant air to escape.

The ridge vent itself is generally a sort of filter that folds over the ridge of the roof, and is then shingled over. Underneath it, the roof deck is notched right at the point, so that air can travel up from the house and out. The filter keeps the airways open while keeping snow, rain, and some critters out of your attic.
