S4S
S4S is another acronym, and it means "sanded 4 sides". It is a way to describe a particular method of
dressing a piece of wood. For our purposes, most of our hardwood is S4S. This means that the oak boards that we
stock tend to already be smooth. This cuts down on the time needed to finish off some projects, since it can be rather
time consuming to sand down a wood that is as hard as oak. This does not mean that there is a total absence of variation
in the wood. Even the S4S products are still ultimately grown rather than molded, and so they will have some character
to them.
S4S generally costs a little more than something that is rought sawn, since it must undergo extra processes.
