Sash
A sash is the part of a window that contains the glass. In many cases, it is the sash that
moves and allows air passage. It is also usually the sash that needs to be replaced when a
baseball crashes through, or if there is a problem leak somewhere.
Should you need to replace a sash, it is extremely important to find the name of the manufacturer
of the window. There are no generic sashes that can fit into any window frame. Each kind of
window is made especially for its own track. Many times, the name of the window company is
etched into the glass somewhere, or is embedded in the sash from on an edge somewhere. If
none of these seem to work, lots of companies make windows with tilting and removable sashes.
This means that you can bring in your sash, and we can try to identify it, size it, and order
a replacement.
Sashes can be made of all sorts of material, but the most common ones are wood, vinyl, and
wood with an exterior layer of vinyl for weather protection.
In some cases, the sash will also have multiple lights, or could
have simluated divided lights. This is also an important bit of
information if you are trying to order replacements or similar looking windows.
