Simulated Divided Light
A simulated divided light window is something of a recent addition to window style. In
earlier days, glass was divided into smaller pieces called lights. This made the window itself
stronger, and it made it easier to replace a small part of the window rather than try to fix
a large, expensive, single sheet of glass.
With the invention of insulated glass, the divided light window changed appearance as well. If
a grill is placed on the inside and outside of the glass, there is still a gap between them,
in the airspace between the glass.
A simulated divided light window has grilles on the inside and outside of the windows, and
also has material between the glass in order to create the appearance of a continuous grillework
through the glass. Only a close inspection reveals this trick, and it is a far less
expensive option than installing lots of smaller insulated panels into a wood frame.
