Starter Strip is often made of aluminum, and its sole purpose is to act as a first row that holds the first course of vinyl siding in place.
Since vinyl siding interlocks, there must be a place to begin, and starter strip fills that role well. Once the siding is installed,
the starter strip is completely hidden from view. Aluminum nails are attached through the slots cut in the top of the strip, generally in the middle of the slot. This is to allow the strip to expand and contract more or less freely as the climate changes. It is also important to note that the nails are not fastened tightly to the wall. If the nail is driven home, then the strip cannot move as it should, and can cause problems like rippling or cracking under severe weather conditions. |
