Stud
Stud is something of a generic term for the wood that is used to frame walls. It is simply a
way to refer to the wall support quickly, whether the wall is made of 2x4 or 2x6
dimensional lumber, or any other size timber.
Stud is also sometimes used as a description of the grade of the timber. A stud grade 2x4 is
generally not the prettiest peice of wood, but it is structurally sound. Since wall studs are almost
always covered over by panelling or wallboards like sheetrock or
blueboard, there is no reason for them to be 'appearance grade'.
