I-joists get their name from their shape. They are used standing up on edge, and so resemble
the letter "I". Their design lends increased strength and rigidity, so that greater distances
can be covered with less support underneath. What it means in building terms is more open space
underneath the joists. It also means that houses can be designed
to be wider, if that is what is needed or wanted. There are two basic sorts of I-Joist. One uses a laminated lumber as its top and bottom rail. The other uses a finger jointed 2x3 or 2x4 rail. In both cases, the web of the "I" is made of a sort of OSB or Waferboard. I-joists come in a variety of sizes. The size you need depends upon the distance you wish to span.
