Hand Split Cedar Shakes
Hand split shakes, or handsplits for short, are a very rustic style of wood siding. While it is unlikely that they are
in fact split by hand any more, handsplits are very rough looking. They literally look as though they had been split
by someone with an axe. There is no attempt to sand or clean up the look of them, because that is their charm. For
a home that is trying to appear more colonial and historic, handsplit shakes would fit the bill. They are generally
thicker than milled shingles, and cost can vary. Availability can also vary, as there is not nearly as much call for
this style of siding than there once had been.
