Pine Clapboards
Pine clapboards are a lower cost alternative to cedar siding. The lower cost comes from the relative ease with which
pine may be acquired, as well as the higher liklihood of knots in the product.
Perhaps the biggest advantage with pine clapboards is its cost. One of its bigger disadvantages is that it lacks the
natural weather resistance that cedar has. While both woods are somewhat soft, pine does not have the tannins that help cedar
resist weather. Now clearly siding is not often left to simply weather until it falls off and rots. (It does happen
from time to time, but not usually.) Pine and cedar will both accept paint or stain pretty readily. The resistance to
moisture becomes more of an issue if and when the paint peels or the stain fades.
