Primed Siding
We stock a few sorts of siding that already have a coat of primer applied. The advantage of this is
pretty easy to see: it's one more step that is already done for you, making the completion of your project
that much closer.
There are still two basic sorts of primed products that we carry. The first is a premium
Clear Vertical Grain. While the CVG is a more expensive sort of cedar siding, it
is not uncommon for it to be painted. Its grain tend to be more stable, which means that the paint may take longer
to begin to peel or crack. The factory priming allows you to install the siding and immediately apply a topcoat, saving
you lots of time in painting and waiting for the primer coat to dry.
The other basic sort of preprimed siding is a finger-jointed siding. It is a lower
cost option, but there is always the chance that you'll see subtle lines where the joints are. On the plus side, the
finger-jointed siding allows you to have real wood siding, with the factory coat of primer at a lower cost.
Most often, the topcoat is a latex paint. This is mostly because latex cleans up easier, and dries faster. The primer
itself is often latex for the same reasons. Whether you use latex or oil paint is
ultimately a decision you must make, though the manufacturers have their own recommendations.
