Second Clear cedar shingles are a more inexpensive option, for times and places where a flawless grain is not necessary. The
second clear shakes are most often used as a starter course for a higher grade of shingle. This is due to the knots that are present in
most of the 2nd clear shingles. The cedar is still as structurally stable as the finer grade of shingles, takes nails in the same way,
and obviously will not react adversely with other cedar that is fastened over it. They can also be used as a top shingle with out any difficulty. In fact, if you want siding that has a little more character, and a more knotty appearance, then second clears could well be a fine choice. As with any cedar siding products, you will get a longer usable life out of the shingles if you stain or seal them with a stain or paint. To extend their lifespan even further, back priming can worthwhile, despite the extra time it takes. |
