White Cedar Shims
White cedar shim stock is not something that you generally will actually see. Every once in a while it
does get used for something like a shed or doghouse, but that is because they are the least expensive of
all of the cedar shingles. Their intended use is to set windows and doors.
Shims are generally used to help bring doors and windows to being plumb and square. This means that the
door or window is straight both vertically and horizontally. This is desirable not just for appearance,
but also for the working of the window or door. When they are plumb and square, the sashes will slide better, and
doors won't tend to close or open by themselves.
The quality of the shim stock is not as high as some of the others, since they are not intended to be seen. Once they
are attached to the frame of the house, they are concealed by exterior siding and wallboard, so they do not need to be
free of knots or have precut straight edges.
