Primed Striated Shakes
Striated shakes are a product that is more prevalent on homes built in the 1950's and 1960's. The shingles themselves are still
made of cedar, but striated shakes are not cut flat like their cousins. They are milled with grooves that run down the
wedge of the shingle. The grooves help to guide water down the siding, and have a different sort of look.
The shingles themselves are thicker, but are still often installed with a backer board behind them. The backer board is
added in order to lend more strength to the exterior wall. The strength is generally needed because the usual exposure
for striated shakes is 14".
The shakes are also primed at the factory. This means that the grain pattern of the shake does not have to be attractive,
and so the selection process does not have to be as stringent, and that time is saved at the time of installation because
the siding only requires a topcoat.
